Jessica’s Journey to the CFP®

Jessica Ng – CFP®
Associate Wealth Architect
At Wealth Architects, professional growth is built into the culture. We are proud to celebrate a significant achievement: Jessica Ng, Associate Wealth Architect, has earned her CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®) designation. This milestone represents years of effort, learning and perseverance. It also reflects the values of our firm and the commitment we make to clients.

In this post, Jessica shares her journey to the CFP®, the ways Wealth Architects supported her along the way, and what this accomplishment means for her and for those she serves.

An Unconventional Path

The traditional path to earning the CFP® designation can seem straightforward: complete the required coursework, take a review program, then sit for the exam within a predictable window of time. Jessica’s path looked different. While she was gearing up for the exam, she experienced a called-off engagement and her father had a stroke. The stroke left her dad with some temporary disabilities, and she had to help support her parents with day-to-day care needs. All of this occurred while she was also balancing a full-time advisory role. It was a lot.

“There were weekends when I was choosing to study instead of spending time with loved ones, and there were nights after work when I was exhausted but still opened the books,” Jessica recalls. “Sometimes I had to take a step back entirely, deal with life, and then find the motivation to start again. That part was hard — restarting, over and over — but I stuck with it.”

Aside from the personal challenges, Jessica also gained a new respect for the intricacy of the work required from those who earn the CFP® designation.

“When I first started studying for the exam, I thought it would be like any other typical exam where you read through the material, memorize it, and take a multiple-choice exam. As I started going through the coursework, I soon realized that I needed time to not only learn my new role at the firm, but to really learn how these concepts piece together and how to apply them. It’s like one giant puzzle, connecting technical and financial concepts with everyone’s own unique set of values and life goals. I needed to go through the material at a much more deliberative pace to cement real understanding. Part of the requirements of getting the CFP® is having financial planning experience – 6,000 hours, which is about 3 years. That started to make sense to me…that I’d need a prolonged period of time to fully grasp the concepts and connect the dots.”

Test Day

Rather than giving up after setbacks, Jessica returned to the material repeatedly until she reached the day of the exam. There was a lot riding on the outcome and she experienced a mix of excitement and jitters, confidence and doubt.

“I knew I had done everything I could to prepare myself to the best of my ability. That’s all anyone could’ve asked from me. Yet the biggest pressure was from myself…not to simply pass, but to prove that I could go through all the bumps and hiccups along this journey and still accomplish what I wanted. At the end of the exam, it all came down to a 10-second wait for the results, the longest wait ever, but I had finally passed! To me, the CFP® exam is much more than just an exam, it’s about the personal journey with all the joys and challenges along the way.”

Culture of Continuous Learning

Earning a CFP® is an individual accomplishment, but Jessica also credits the Wealth Architects team for helping make it possible. From scheduling flexibility during review periods to moral support from colleagues, she felt the firm’s commitment to her professional development at every step.

“Everyone here understood what I was working toward,” she says. “My mentors and teammates encouraged me when I needed it most. They celebrated small wins with me along the way, and they gave me the space to focus on studying during those crucial weeks before the exam.”

This reflects a broader value at Wealth Architects: a culture of continuous learning. The firm invests in its advisors and associates, and believes that a strong foundation of knowledge directly benefits clients. Professional growth is encouraged not just as a career milestone but as a way to deepen the impact advisors can have on people’s lives.

The Impact of the CFP®

Passing the CFP® exam was more than checking a box. For Jessica, the designation represents a new level of confidence and capability as an advisor.

“Going through the coursework and preparing for the exam forced me to strengthen my technical skills in every area of planning — tax, estate, investments, retirement, insurance,” she says. “It gave me a deeper understanding of how all the pieces fit together for a client. When I’m in meetings now, I feel more equipped to explain complex strategies clearly and anticipate what questions might come up.”

This impact is not just personal. Clients benefit from the rigor and standards that come with the CFP® designation. CFP® professionals are held to a fiduciary duty and a strict code of ethics, which aligns with one of Wealth Architects’ core values to always encourage independent, client-centered thinking. Jessica’s accomplishment means clients receive advice informed by one of the highest professional standards in financial planning. It also signals to prospective clients that the firm values excellence and invests in building a team that can guide them through every stage of life with clarity and care.

At Wealth Architects, we celebrate Jessica’s success and look forward to the impact she will continue to have on the lives of those she serves.
