This piece is part of our "Profile on Living a Wealthy Life" series, highlighting the stories of Wealth Architects clients and the unique ways they are living with purpose, balance and fulfillment.

Tell us a bit about your story.
We met at UCSD in the 1980s, married in 1998, and built a life that took us all over the country. Along the way, we raised our son, built our careers, and always carried a vision of what life could look like someday. Today, we are happily retired on the California Central Coast, living in a home we always dreamed of, surrounded by a community we genuinely love.

How would you describe your “wealthy life” today?
For us, it comes down to one word: freedom. Financial freedom plays a role, but it is really the combination of time, health, and peace of mind that defines it. There is a deep appreciation for the ability to choose how each day is spent. Some days are active, filled with pickleball or Pilates. Others are slower, with a mid-day nap or watching a race or show without guilt. There is also a shared love of travel, from more comfortable trips to adventurous backpacking experiences.

What was the catalyst for making this shift?
There was a realization that time is finite and incredibly valuable. The ability to choose how that time is used felt like a privilege that should not be delayed. That shift in perspective made it easier to prioritize what truly mattered and to move toward it with intention.

What did it take to get there?
A big part of it was letting go of expectations. There are many artificial boundaries in life, often shaped by what others think or expect. Moving beyond those, and releasing the guilt associated with not following a prescribed path, was important. It also meant stepping away from relationships or environments that were not healthy, and developing a clearer understanding of who we are and who we are not.

How did Wealth Architects play a role in this journey?
Wealth Architects, and Tyler in particular, played a fundamental role. The relationship went far beyond traditional financial advice. Tyler became a trusted partner, someone who helped connect the financial picture with the life we actually wanted to live. He helped us see that early retirement was not just possible, but sustainable, which opened the door to this next chapter.

From there, it became a collaborative process. Whether it was evaluating the move from San Jose to Cambria, thinking through the renovation of our home and Airbnb, or simply having someone to talk through decisions with, there was a consistent sense of support. It felt like having a coach, a sounding board, and a source of strength all in one.

What has this experience meant to you?
It has been liberating. There is a stronger sense of self-respect, a deeper feeling of peace, and a greater alignment between values and daily life. At the same time, there is still a desire to contribute and help where it makes sense. It is not about stepping away from the world, but engaging with it more intentionally.

What values have guided this chapter?
Staying young at heart has been important. That means staying physically active, maintaining a sense of humor, and approaching life with curiosity and openness. There is also a focus on authenticity, on not being overly concerned with outside expectations, and instead living in a way that feels true.

What have you learned along the way?
One of the biggest lessons is not to let a career define identity. Work can be meaningful, but it is only one part of a much broader life. There is real value in creating space to explore who one is outside of that structure and to pursue what genuinely brings fulfillment.

What advice would you share with others?
There is a phrase that has stuck with us: “youth is wasted on the young.” The idea is simple. Do not wait too long to understand what really matters. Time has a way of moving quickly, and the opportunity to live fully should not be postponed indefinitely.
